It’s quite common that new patients come to our clinic completely unaware of what causes their pain. Sometimes is a weekend warrior who overused a joint in some athletic competition, the unfortunate participant to a car accident, someone who lifted too much weight at work or home, or even the grandmother who fell asleep holding their grandchild in one position all night long. Any of these situations can cause an almost immediate damage or irritation to muscles, bone, or the nervous system resulting in pain or discomfort.
The majority of people who have arm and leg pain have developed it gradually over a long period of time and are likely unaware of what caused it. Patients are often confused by what caused the pain and start in on a list of likely suspects like arthritis, bursitis, tendinitis, vertebral subluxations, and even frozen shoulder. In addition to the pain sources, taking new medications of switching from older medications like antibiotics, birth control or anti-anxiety medications have shown to contribute to arm and leg pain development.
As if this list of possible culprits isn’t confusing enough, there is also evidence in some patients that their pain can be caused by “referred pain”. This pattern of pain is often descriptive of the sensation of pain down the left arm that people feel during a heart attack. Other times, it could describe pain in the right shoulder blade that’s typically a symptom of inflamed gall bladder. Frequently, we see patients who present arm and leg pain that is actively referred from the nerve irritation that begins at the spinal column. Sometimes, narrowing caused by vertebrae being out of position where the nerves leave the spine can result in nerve irritation and produce pain down the entire path. Sciatica is a perfect example of this natural mechanism.

Can Chiropractic Help?
Just like any condition, you want to treat the most common and typical causes of arm and leg pain and symptoms first. Dr. Kaci Roach has found that many years of misalignments of the vertebrae in the neck can often be responsible for the majority of arm and leg pain. Irritation to the nerves and surrounding tissues can occur when the neck vertebrae are out of position and mobility is hindered as a result. It’s not uncommon to see a patient’s surprise when they learn that many of the nerves in their body travel from their spinal column all the way to their finger tips and toes. Injury to the vertebrae in the spine can create the sensation of pain anywhere along our arms and legs as a result. Through treating the neck for misalignment with chiropractic methods, patients at our office tend to experience high levels of success.
